This novel is different than what I typically read, but I did enjoy it all the way through. I say different in the sense that this is a main plot romance, and most romance (if any) I tend to pick up is subplot - occasionally there is a main plot that has complimentary main plot that isn't romance focused. But I digress.
Forgive me is about a college English professor who has a reputation for being harder than neccessary and his graduate assistant who is starting her final year of grad school. Both characters have complex pasts that they would like to leave behind, and despite their colleague and student-professor relationship statuses that are the most obvious obstacles as to why they cannot be in a romantic relationship, they cannot help but fall for each other.
It's a balance of dark and light. You want to see the two main characters, Andrew & Evie, succeed - Embers has written them in a way where it feels very easy to like them as you get to know them throughout the novel. We get to see the way that each respectively struggle with obvious barriers, which in turn shows you a piece of their hearts that curates a kind of respect.
This is a romance novel that tackles some heavy topics. All trigger warnings are listed at the beginning of the novel, but they are: sexual assault, violence, kidnapping, blood & gore, alcohol abuse, anxiety, panic attacks, and death. With all of this in mind and taking into account that our main characters are 27 and 35, I would not reccommend this novel to anyone younger than 21. The warnings are there with good reason and could be a lot for anyone. Despite the trigger warnings, some of the moments associated with those warnings caught me off guard. I think sometimes you can have an idea of what is to come with those, but there were still twists that I did not entirely predict.
If you enjoy: forbidden romance, southern charm, strong family relationships, and watching two people be absolutely smitten with each other despite their circumstances, then you just might enjoy "Forgive Me" by Kate Embers.
